Bedford Learning and Experiences clients, from Torrensville and Panorama, continued a tradition that pays tribute to our servicemen and women by placing flags on 4,500 memorials in the lead up to Remembrance Day.

It was a morning of reflection at Derrick Gardens, Centennial Park as they took the time to carefully place each Australian flag. This provides a moving backdrop for the Centennial Park Remembrance Day Service.

“I am grateful that I can be here today to pay respect to Australian soldiers who were prepared to serve their country to make sure Australia could remain safe and free,” said Bedford Panorama client, Micah.

The Derrick Gardens memorial area at Centennial Park was established in 1956 and is named after WWII Victoria Cross recipient, Lieutenant Thomas “Diver” Derrick. This designated area for returned and current service personnel is the final resting place of more than 4,500 servicemen and women. At the base of Derrick Gardens is the Cross of Remembrance, protected by two towering pine trees sown from original seedlings from Lone Pine in Gallipoli.

Janet Miller, Centennial Park CEO says “Maintaining a meaningful connection to our history is important, to nurture the respect for our servicemen and women through the generations. So inviting Bedford clients in to carry on the tradition of laying the flags helps to ensure the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Bedford’s APG (Adelaide Property and Gardens) has also helped to prepare for the Service, working over the past week to complete the mowing, edging, and tidying around the memorial area to prepare for flag placement.

Jason O’Donohue, APG and GreenInc General Manager says, “We are proud to be a part of this important service, and really go all out to make sure the grounds look immaculate”.

Centennial Park Remembrance Day Service will be held on Monday 11 November at 10:30am.

Lest we forget.
