Bedford is excited to announce a new partnership with world leading South Australian organic carob producer, Australian Carob Company.

Owner and operator, Michael Jolley started the company in 2000 when he began planting a carob orchard from grafted trees on a 76-acre block of land in Booborowie, two hours north of Adelaide.

After 10 years, the carob finally trees produced pods and the company began processing and packaging their range of kibble, powders and syrups through Australian health food stores with a broader strategy to reach new export markets.

Today, there are 6,000 carob trees thriving on the property and the company is rapidly expanding as its premium carob products hit the shelves across the USA, New Zealand and Japan.

“Healthy food choices are driving the global appetite for carob products which is great news for us. The challenge is to efficiently scale up and meet increasing export demand,” Michael says.

“Our partnership with Bedford helps solve this problem. It gives us the opportunity to work on our business, not in it and to achieve our goal to scale up production from 100 to 600 tonnes annually.

“Handing over the day-to-day operations of preparing our products for market enables us to focus on attracting new customers and growing the business further rather than being bogged down with manual handling” he says.

The global appetite for Australia’s high-quality food products is strong and supporting producers to scale up to meet new markets is a key strategic focus of Bedford’s packaging division.

Bedford’s General Manager of Packaging Brett Stevens says, “by outsourcing the processing and packaging of products to Bedford we help alleviate the pressure and sweat effort of managing the day-to-day operations to bring a product to market”.

As well as scaling up operations a partnership with Bedford enables producers to maintain supply chain controls and the integrity of their products from paddock to plate.

“We have the facilities, infrastructure and workforce to handle a range of business needs and with a proven track record of exceptional food safety and quality including HACCP and Organic certification, we offer a winning combination,” he says.

Bedford is pivoting to expand its operations to work with other South Australian businesses producing carob products over the coming months. Watch this space!
