We all know the joy and growth that come from trying new things, learning fresh skills, and connecting with others. These experiences contribute to our overall well-being, giving us purpose and a sense of belonging. The great news? These benefits are available to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

At Bedford Learning and Experiences, we are dedicated to making these opportunities accessible to adults with disability in Adelaide and across regional South Australia. With a client-centred approach and individualised support, we empower people with disability to explore new interests, gain knowledge, develop essential skills, and build meaningful connections—all in an environment that is fun and engaging.

Why engage with new activities?

Being part of the community is essential for everyone. Engaging in social and recreational activities allows us to connect with others, build relationships, and feel included. For adults with disability, accessible outdoor activities, recreation, and social experiences are especially impactful. They create space for connection, help reduce feelings of isolation and promote emotional well-being. At Bedford, we believe in the power of shared experiences, fostering a sense of belonging for all.

Learn
Skills that enhance daily life are fundamental to independence, and for adults with disability, life skills programs are a valuable part of this journey. From numeracy and literacy development, building computer and budgeting skills, gardening, sewing and much more, these practical skills help participants manage their everyday lives with confidence.

Equally important are vocational programs, designed to equip people with the tools and knowledge necessary for meaningful employment. These initiatives don’t just teach job-related skills, they also help boost self-esteem and a strong sense of purpose. By building these skills, participants can experience the rewarding feeling of contributing to society and achieving financial independence.

Create
Art is one of the most powerful forms of self-expression, and its impact for people with disability is especially profound. For many, creating art offers an opportunity to share emotions and experiences that may be hard to express through words alone. Whether through visual, performing, or creative arts, including painting, music and dance, the creative process becomes a tool for emotional release and reflection.

The arts also play a critical role in improving mental health. Arts provide a creative outlet that enhances overall well-being. These activities not only help participants process emotions but also provide an opportunity for personal growth.

Bedford Learning and Experiences offers its artists opportunities to engage in micro-enterprise by creating, marketing, and selling their artwork. Through events like the annual SALA Festival, displays in the Bedford foyer, and exhibitions in small galleries, 100 per cent of sales go directly to the artists. This not only celebrates their talent but also rewards their dedication and creativity, providing them with extra income while boosting their confidence and connection to the community. It also gives the artists valuable experience in running a creative enterprise, helping them build skills for the future.

At Bedford Learning and Experiences, we are here to help adults with disability have choice and control of their journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Whether through exploring new interests, learning life-changing skills, participating in their community, or creating works of art, we offer opportunities that enrich lives in a meaningful way.
