Bedford’s Supported Independent Living provides whole-of-life support, allowing you to reach the level of independence that’s right for you.

The Balyana residence is nestled in a quiet location in the foothills of Clapham. Set back from the road, this peaceful area boasts open spaces, native trees and an array of wildlife.

Balyana has a close-knit community of 60 residents in both apartments and share houses, who are often seen utilizing the outdoor BBQ area, and basketball court.

Our residential services are designed for you to be independent while providing support when needed. The Bedford team will work alongside you to ensure the support we provide meets your needs, but allows you the space to navigate your own life choices with a focus on self-advocacy. We provide a safe, community-focused space where you’ll be supported to run your own home, whilst also connect with the wider community.

Balyana is located only a short distance from Bedford Panorama, providing a quick and convenient 10 minute walk for the residents that work at Panorama.

Balyana is situated in a convenient location close to a number of restaurants, cafes and takeaway shops, with Pasadena Shopping Centre within walking distance (approx. 10-15 min walk). Public transport is nearby, providing easy access to the city, Mitcham Square and Marion Shopping Centre. Bedford staff provide support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and with Wi-Fi available, staying connected is never a problem.

Residential Services FAQs

What is supported independent living?

Supported Independent Living allows people with disability to live independently while still receiving help with day-to-day tasks around the home.

What type of support can I access?

We provide support to help you to learn how to be independent as possible while building your skills. You get to choose what kind of support you need based on what you want to do (your goals).

Can my partner stay over?

Yes, your partner can stay. If share with others, you will need to ask if they are comfortable with your partner staying overnight.

Can I drink alcohol?

Yes, you are welcome to drink alcohol if you choose. We encourage you to be sensible and to be safe when consuming alcohol and follow the recommendations from SA Health – Alcohol drinking guides.

What are the NDIS funding requirements?

You will be required to have NDIS Supported Independent Living funding (SIL) or Home and Living funding to pay for your supports that Balyana staff provide. How many people share each house?

Depending on the size of the house, some of our houses are shared by 2 people, others have 3 other people.

Each person has their own bedroom but share facilities such as the kitchen, lounge room and bathroom.

Do I have to share a house with others?

Yes, all houses at Balyana are shared by at least 2 people.

Do I have a choice of who I share with?

Yes, where possible, we aim to match people with others who are like minded and have similar interests to ensure a good balance in the home.

How much does it cost to live at Balyana?

Rent = $119.66 per week, this is paid to Unity Housing

Utilities = $61.34 per week, this is paid to Bedford and covers, phone and free internet, electricity, gardening, communal furniture, and white goods.

Food – dependent on where you are living - a fee for food or alternative food options are discussed before you move in.

Do you provide accommodation for LBGTQI people?

Yes, we do not discriminate against anyone based on their race, gender or preferences.

How long does the process take?

The process is dependent on your NDIS funding and if you require a Change of Circumstances (if you do require a Change of Circumstances, it could take 3 to 12 months).

If you have SIL or Home and Living funds stated in your NDIS Plan, we suggest that you visit Balyana for a respite stay. This will give you an opportunity to meet your potential housemates and staff. If you decide to move into Balyana, we can arrange a move-in date that suits you best.

Do you provide furniture?

You will need to provide your own bed, a bedside table and a chest of draws, bed linen, towels, personal belongings such as clothes, photos, pictures, books, music, small pot plants, games etc. All other furniture is provided; however, you can bring your own television and radio for your bedroom.
